Using DIRECT battery power in all previous Ciúnas devices was a major improvement in sonics. I believe that all voltage regulator integrated circuits, even the best ones, when delivering dynamic current have some form of instability. It could be fluctuating noise or some anomalies in the presentation of subtle details when heavy fast, heavy currents are simultaneously required? Whatever it is, these batteries do not have such instability when supplying current to digital devices at high frequencies, for instance. This stability & ultra low noise battery power confers many audible improvements in audio devices such as a perceived increase in depth & solidity of sound stage, increased body to the sound, better timbre & perceptually louder - in a word more realism & musicality.

There's a lot of confusion over using batteries as power sources in audio devices. Just a note about battery packs for charging phones etc. which many people believe who use these to power audio devices & is the sound of battery power - it's not. All these battery packs have a voltage regulator (often a switcher regulator) between battery & output i.e they are not direct battery power

 

Now using SUPERCAPACITORS instead of batteries to power all devices which, not surprisingly, has very similar sonic attributes to LiFePO4 battery power stability but seems to have an even faster current delivery resulting in audibly cleaner crisper attack portions of the sound. Of course only when powered direct from supercapacitors.

When using stable, low noise power, isolating the USB data carrying wires D+ & D-), brings more audible improvements. Removing noise riding on these wires (usually common mode noise), further enhances the same audible factors leading to even more realistic sound which has to be heard to be believed.

ISO-HUB Device

The ISO-HUB truly isolates & regenerates/re-forms the USB signals before it inputs the connected USB audio device - it is simply inserted before a USB audio device - a USB cable is connected between computer and ISO-HUB - USB cables can be plugged into it’s 4 USB ports, just like any USB hub work - to feed the isolated/reformed USB signal to any USB audio device plugged into the ports.

 

It consists of one type B USB input port & 4 X USB 2.0 high speed I/O ports that are both isolated & reclocked/re-formed for best USB signal integrity. A USB device can be plugged into any of these 4 isolated USB ports 

Both sides of the USB isolator are DIRECTLY powered by supercapacitor power for very low noise & best signal integrity. The USB isolation is based on a integrated circuit by Silanna. Other designers who use these chips power their incoming USB "dirty" side with USB power but I use the same clean power from supercapacitors on both dirty & clean sides. Again, this approach sounds better.

The importance of using the best possible power for recreating the USB signal with highest possible signal integrity, cannot be overstated - it is audibly significant. 

USE CASES

The 4 ports allow a number of USB DACs, USB to SPDIF converters or other USB audio devices to be plugged in. As an example a USB SSD or USB stick may be plugged in & audio files played from this.

 

Any device connected to the USB ports benefits from clean, reformatted, isolated USB signals.

ISO-SPDIF Device

 

The ISO-SPDIF consists of the above ISO-HUB technology combined with the Ciunas USB to SPDIF converter technology. The USB to SPDIF converter used is the well-regarded Ciunas DDD converter.  This is the first truly isolated USB high speed USB-SPDIF to come to market (4 years later I still don't know of one so it is still unique). The input USB signal is isolated & reformed before entering the Amanero USB receiver & the I2S output signal is further reclocked by low jitter audio oscillators just as it enters the WM8805 SPDIF transceiver. This provides the cleanest SPDIF output signal possible.

Supercapacitors are trickled charged when powered via a plugged in 5V supply from supplied SMPS 5V modified to shunt current leakage noise to mains earth.

ISO-DAC Device

The ISO-DAC consists of the same ISO-HUB technology combined with a USB DAC (the very well reviewed Ciunas DAC) providing RCA analogue stereo outputs.  Again, this is the first truly isolated USB high speed DAC to come to market. The input USB signal is isolated & reformed before entering the Amanero USB receiver & the I2S output signal is further reclocked by low jitter audio oscillators just as it enters the DAC chip. This provides the cleanest possible I2S signal to the DAc chip.

ISO-PS power supply

The ISO-PS is a battery power supply (case dimension: 4.72 x 1.69 x 3.07") using user-replaceable batteries delivering isolated 5V & 7V outputs with continuous current output ratings of 2 Amps or more (but huge instantaneous current delivery headroom >120 Amps). The 7V output  is provided directly from the battery supply. The 5V supply is derived from a regulator driven directly by the 7V battery supply for the cleanest possible feed to the voltage regulator.

Supercapacitor ISO-PS power supply

The supercapacitor ISO-PS is the latest PS device delivering isolated dual 5V outputs with continuous current output ratings of 3 Amps or more (but huge instantaneous current delivery headroom >120 Amps). The 5V output  is provided directly from the supercapacitors not through voltage regulators for the cleanest possible power source.

Other voltage outputs & variants power supplies are under development
